Brain Dead or Just Convenient?

"Brain death" is the medical world's way of saying someone's brain has clocked out for good, including the brainstem that keeps you breathing. Since the 1960s, doctors have used strict tests such as having no reflexes, no reaction to pain, and zero chance of breathing without a machine to declare someone brain dead. They use these "rules" to avoid mix-ups, but every now and then you hear a horror story about someone who wasn’t quite as "gone" as the doctors thought. In the end there REALLY is no way to prove "brain death" and it is just a convenient way of saying "we’re pretty sure they’re done."

There is a theory that brain death is less about science and more about snagging organs or freeing up hospital beds. Organ donation needs brain death in conjunction with a "living body" to keep hearts and livers fresh, but there are supposed to be ironclad rules to ensure nobody’s jumping the gun for their organ harvest. With the profit made on organ transplant it’s not hard to imagine a world where "brain dead" is a convenient label to rush things along. The idea that someone might be written off too soon for a transplant or a budget cut is quite plausible. You may just consider how being an "organ donor" may or may not impact how enthusiastic they are to keep you going in the event of a tragic accident.

Yes, this may sound grim, but unfortunately much of our world is just that. Being an organ donor can be a wonderful blessing to those in need, but also is a hefty decision to make.

Much Love,
Lynn

  1. The whole medical industry needs to be cleaned up, and hospitals for profit have to have a higher ethical standard in these "Brain dead" decisions on ending life and organ harvesting. Is it a made up term to describe a coma-like state?Imagine a family that asks for life support for years in hopes their love one comes out, and the cost to the insurance and hospital losing a bed all that time. This is a whole moral and ethical can of worms like late term abortion.
