Let’s talk dirty, about laundry that is. Those colorful jugs of Tide, Arm & Hammer, and Gain stare at you like they’re innocent, but they're not. These “cleaning heroes” are secretly packed with toxic chemicals called Nonyl Phenol Ethoxylate (NPE). Not only does this ingredient stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells (yes, you read that right), but it’s also a known endocrine and growth hormone disruptor. It’s so toxic that other countries have banned it, yet here in the U.S. we think nothing of it. Are we REALLY cleaning our clothes or just marinating them in a chemical stew?
Consider going natural: Ditch the chemical jugs and try a safer, DIY laundry soap. Mix 1 cup of washing soda, 1 cup of borax, and 1 bar of grated castile soap (like Dr. Bronner’s) in a large bowl. You can even add a few drops of essential oil like lavender or tea tree for a natural scent. Use 1-2 tablespoons per load, and voilà TRULY clean clothes without the toxins.
If DIY isn’t your vibe, look for eco-friendly brands like Seventh Generation or ECOS, which avoid NPE and other harmful additives. Your body will thank you!

I was using the arm and hammer brand thinking it was mostly borax but add very little as I also have 2 rubberized magnet cubes in the washer that's supposed to soften the water to make the dirt leave the clothes easier. I guess it's time for the higher priced spread of 7th Gen.
ReplyDeleteI used to make my own with the borax, fells naptha and washing suds, but didn't feel the clothes got as clean. Maybe I had my ratios off? I think I need to revisit that again. Too bad they can't just REMOVE the harmful ingredients. What purpose do they serve anyway?
Delete7th generation is good, unless they have been bought out now by a big conglomerate, in which case I would no longer trust them. The Trader Joe's lavender clothing detergent is great. I believe there are about 4 clean ingredients. Does the job well. Whenever I cross to the U.S. I stock up.
