Q: Is Trump just trolling about Canada becoming the “51st state,” or will it happen in the next five years?A: I sense Trump’s talk of Canada joining the U.S started as a trolling stunt but quickly evolved into more serious talk. Something creative could very well be in the works. I can absolutely see Alberta joining as a U.S. territory within five years due to economic pressures and discontent with socialism. It’s not full statehood, but more like a territory while politics and representation are finalized.
Q: How would parts of Canada joining as a territory work, considering representation, politics, financial shifts, and metric-to-U.S. measurements?A: Representation: A territory like Alberta would get limited U.S. Congress representation, similar to Puerto Rico to avoid a huge upheaval. Things would need to be fair and approached on a common sense level.
Politics: Conservative regions like Alberta are fed up with Canada’s federal policies. They might align with the U.S., while Quebec and urban areas resist due to cultural differences. I sense these "territories" will have to join individually, and not dependent on what the other areas are doing.
Financial Shifts: U.S. tariffs influence Canada’s economy, especially resource-rich areas. Switching to the U.S. dollar and aligning taxes would be complex but manageable. This would definitely need to be phased in and clearly thought out.
Measurements: Switching from liters to gallons or kilometers to miles would be gradual, like in other U.S. territories. Even things as simple as gas pumps would need to be modified.
Frustration with Canada’s “socialist” policies, high taxes and environmental regulations open the ideas toward U.S. integration. This will be interesting to watch it unfold.
