If true, could this event parallel mythological accounts of petrification, such as Medusa’s gaze in Greek mythology or trolls transforming into stone when exposed to sunlight in Scandinavian folklore?
A. After looking more closely into this I understand this to be a startling event that was detailed in a declassified CIA document from the late 1980s. Apparently Soviet soldiers in Siberia shot down a saucer-shaped UFO during a training exercise. Five humanoid beings with large heads and black eyes emerged, merging into a spherical object that emitted a blinding white light, transforming 23 of 25 soldiers into limestone-like "stone poles." Two soldiers that were shielded by shade survived. 
In thinking on this I sense this incident was likely a botched military test of reverse-engineered ancient technology [of Tartarian times]. I suspect the “UFO” may have been a Soviet prototype attempting to harness Tartarian energy systems, but lacked the knowledge of how to wield such power. The petrification resulted from uncontrolled energy discharge resembling the modern day direct energy weapons. The Soviet and Western governments realized the technology’s unpredictability, decommissioned the project and buried the evidence in a web of disinformation. The alien narrative was just a convenient distraction. The CIA’s unclassified report was a calculated leak, blending truth with fiction.

The ET aspect of the report being disinfo actually makes alot of sense. If the aliens were advanced enough that they could turn people into lime stone, you would think their craft would easily withstand human weapons.
