There is a Reason They are Called "Wisdom" Teeth

Routine removal of wisdom teeth is one of dentistry's biggest money grabs. Millions get told to yank them out "just in case" they because future problems "might" occur despite having zero pain or issues. Evidence shows this is mostly unnecessary and fear-mongering.

Major studies find insufficient evidence supporting routine extraction of asymptomatic, disease-free wisdom teeth. Monitoring them is often better, potentially eliminating unnecessary surgeries. The UK largely stopped this practice years ago, but in the US it continues costing patients millions (or more) annually.

The real driver? Profit. All four teeth out averages $1,200–$4,000+. That's a huge revenue for dental practices, creating strong incentives to recommend surgery even when teeth are fine. Health risks are serious with pain, infection, dry socket, permanent nerve damage, and opioid prescriptions.

The worst side effect is something many don't realize and that is losing potential real wisdom. Wisdom teeth eruption involves complex jaw development and abundant stem cells in the pulp/follicle. Dental pulp stem cells (especially from wisdom teeth) can differentiate into neural cells, form neuron-like structures, and even fire electrical impulses.  This hints at a natural role in supporting neuropathways or brain repair during young adulthood. Premature removal discards this regenerative reservoir.

Only extract if they're actively causing infection, severe crowding, decay, or damage. Otherwise, demand evidence, get second opinions, and choose monitoring. Your health, nerves, wallet and untapped "wisdom" deserve better.

Much Love, Lynn
