We're at that same point with NASA. Most "photos" you see like the perfect blue marble Earth shots, galaxies and Mars aren't raw images. They're composites, color-enhanced visualizations, or straight CGI. NASA often calls them "illustrations" in small print, but the hype makes them allude they are real snapshots from space.
This illusion is maintained because the spectacle sells. More people are noticing the too perfect, too polished pics, yet many still watch, just like wrestling fans did. This entire goal of this manufactured imagery is to keep us engaged while bigger earthly issues get ignored.
