You Need B12, Bring on the Meat

Humans require vitamin B12 in our diet. Without it we experience extreme fatigue, breathlessness, nerve damage, and even symptoms of dementia. The important thing to know is that B12 is only found naturally in animal-sourced foods, specifically meat.

There is strong evidence that a purely vegan diet is far from what our bodies used to evolve. For most of human history meat wasn’t optional. It was essential fuel that helped us survive and develop the complex brains and bodies we have today. That doesn’t mean you can’t choose to go meatless. Many people follow vegetarian or vegan diets for ethical, environmental, or personal reasons, and some do well with careful planning. If you decide to avoid animal foods, you need to be very intentional about rounding out your nutrition.  [Other nutrients like iron, zinc, creatine, and certain omega-3s can also be harder to get in the right forms from plants alone.]

Pay close attention to how you feel. If you start experiencing low energy, brain fog, mood changes, or just generally feel “off,” it’s worth checking your nutrient levels. When I tried a meatless diet, I felt the worst I’d ever felt with constant fatigue and mental cloudiness that lifted once I reintroduced animal foods. Everyone’s body is different, so the most important thing is to listen to your own body.

Have you noticed changes in how you feel when you change the amount of animal foods in your diet? Feel free to share your experience in the comments.

Much Love, Lynn
